1977 Topps #587 Rick Baldwin

About Rick Baldwin
The 1977 Topps card #587 pictures Baldwin as a Met after a season split between Tidewater and New York. He went 8-4 with 14 saves in Triple-A in 1976. In New York he made 11 appearances without a decision, throwing 22 2/3 innings with a 2.38 ERA. He was recalled again in May 1977 after the Mets released Ray Sadecki.
Rick Baldwin was a right-handed reliever who pitched three seasons for the New York Mets, 1975 through 1977. The Mets drafted him in the ninth round of the 1971 draft out of Thomas Downey High School in Modesto, California. He was used mainly as a starter in his first two minor league seasons, began relieving more in 1973 and worked almost entirely in relief by 1974. He finished his four farm-system seasons at 34-25 with ten saves and a 4.03 ERA. He earned a spot on the Mets roster to open the 1975 season and appeared in 105 major league games over three years. He went 4-7 with a 3.60 ERA and seven saves. He batted left-handed and threw right-handed. His last major league appearance came on October 2, 1977, when he earned a save in a 6-4 Mets win over the Cardinals at Busch Memorial Stadium. Seattle took him in the Rule 5 draft that December, and he finished in Triple-A in 1978 with San Jose and Columbus. Baldwin died in Modesto in 2020 at age 67.
