1978 Topps #378 Bobby Winkles

About this card
This is one of the 25 manager cards. Team cards and manager cards are separate cards this year: every club has a team card, and every club except the Milwaukee Brewers has a manager card - George Bamberger was hired in late January 1978, too late to be included.
About Bobby Winkles
Winkles took over Oakland in June 1977 when Charlie Finley moved Jack McKeon into an executive role, and the A's went 37-71 under him to finish last in the AL West. The 1978 club started 19-5 by May 5. It was 24-15 and in first place when he resigned on May 23 over Finley's interference, telling coaches who urged him to stay, "I've had enough." McKeon replaced him. His #378 is a manager card of its own, printed with the Athletics.
Bobby Winkles managed the California Angels and Oakland Athletics, but his name was made on campus. An infielder in the Chicago White Sox farm system from 1951 to 1958, he was told by Indianapolis manager Walker Cooper that only one thing was keeping him out of the major leagues: "Ability." Arizona State hired him as head baseball coach in 1959. Over 13 seasons he went 524-173 and coached Rick Monday, Sal Bando and Reggie Jackson. The Sun Devils won national titles in 1965, 1967 and 1969. Angels general manager Harry Dalton brought him to the majors as a coach in 1972, a leap from college that drew considerable press attention. His managerial record finished at 170-213. He also coached the Giants and the White Sox, ran Chicago's player development department, spent 1986 to 1988 as a Montreal Expos coach and called Expos games on radio through 1993. He entered the ABCA Collegiate Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997 and the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.
