About Manny Sarmiento
Sarmiento made 63 appearances for the 1978 Reds, four of them starts. He went 9-7 with a 4.38 ERA and five saves. He struck out 72 in 127 1/3 innings. That summer he said, "We're hot, and we're going to catch the Giants. We might win 20 in a row." His Topps card is #377, printed with the Reds.
Manny Sarmiento was a Venezuelan right-hander from Cagua who pitched in the majors for the Cincinnati Reds (1976-79), Seattle Mariners (1980) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1982-83). He threw a split-finger fastball and once sang the national anthem before a game. He spent four seasons with Cincinnati's Big Red Machine, making 132 appearances. Injured with Seattle in 1980, he needed season-ending surgery. He was traded to the Red Sox in April 1981, spent that season at Triple-A Pawtucket, and was purchased by Pittsburgh afterward. In an emergency move in 1982 he switched from the bullpen to the rotation, making 17 starts among his 35 games. He went 9-4 with a 3.39 ERA and 81 strikeouts, then returned to relief in 1983. Arm surgery followed in 1984; he pitched in Triple-A in 1985 and in the Mexican Baseball League in 1986. His major league totals were 26-22 with a 3.49 ERA and 283 strikeouts.
