1978 Topps #301 Buddy Schultz

About Buddy Schultz
The Cubs traded Schultz to St. Louis for Mark Covert on February 28, 1977. In his first Cardinals season, Schultz went 6-1 with a 2.32 ERA over 85 1/3 innings. His rookie card arrived in 1978 Topps as #301, identifying him with St. Louis.
Buddy Schultz was a left-handed relief pitcher for the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals from 1975 through 1979. Before turning professional, he pitched for Miami University, where he struck out 26 Wright State batters on April 3, 1971, setting an NCAA record for a nine-inning game. Philadelphia had drafted him in 1968, but he kept a promise to Miami coach Bud Middaugh and attended college. He received first-team All-Mid-American Conference honors in 1970 and 1971 and honorable mention in 1972. Schultz finished his major league career 15-9 with 12 saves in 168 pitching appearances. Miami inducted him into its Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.
