1978 Topps #12 Don Aase

About Don Aase
The Red Sox traded Aase to the Angels in December 1977 for infielder Jerry Remy, so his 1978 card #12 still shows him with Boston. In California he was the fourth starter behind Nolan Ryan, started 29 games and went 11-8 with a 4.03 ERA. He struck out 93 in 178 2/3 innings for an Angels team that finished second in the AL West.
Don Aase was a right-handed pitcher who worked 13 big league seasons for the Red Sox, Angels, Orioles, Mets and Dodgers, starting 91 of his 448 games and saving 82. A sixth-round Red Sox pick in 1972 out of Savanna High School in Anaheim, he opened his pro career 0-10 at Williamsport, then led the Carolina League in 1974 with 17 wins and a 2.34 ERA. He finished 66-60 with a 3.80 ERA in the majors. With the Angels he moved from the rotation to the bullpen in mid-1980 and never started again. Elbow reconstruction in October 1982, among the earliest operations of the Tommy John type, kept him out for almost two years. He set the Orioles' single-season record with 34 saves in 1986, was named to that year's American League All-Star team and earned the save in the game. He retired after the 1990 season with the Dodgers.
