1978 Topps #320 Fred Lynn

About Fred Lynn
Healthy again, Lynn played 150 games and hit .298 with 22 home runs and 82 RBI. He made a fourth All-Star team and won his second Gold Glove. Boston won 99 games and lost the one-game playoff to the Yankees 5-4 at Fenway Park, where Lynn singled and drove in a run. His card is #320.
Fred Lynn was a left-handed center fielder who played 17 seasons (1974-1990) for the Red Sox, Angels, Orioles, Tigers and Padres, hitting .283 with 306 home runs. A three-time national champion at USC, he was a second-round Red Sox pick in 1973. In 1975 he became the first player to win Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player in the same season, and on June 18 that year he hit three home runs and drove in 10 runs at Tiger Stadium. With fellow rookie Jim Rice he was dubbed one of the Gold Dust Twins. He earned four Gold Gloves and nine All-Star selections. Traded to California in January 1981, he was ALCS MVP in 1982 despite the Angels' loss, and in 1983 hit the only grand slam in All-Star Game history. Injuries from all-out play meant he never played more than 150 games in a season. He was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2002.
