About this card

This is one of the 25 manager cards. Team cards and manager cards are separate cards this year: every club has a team card, and every club except the Milwaukee Brewers has a manager card - George Bamberger was hired in late January 1978, too late to be included.

About Don Zimmer

Zimmer managed Boston to 97-64 and third place in the American League East in 1977. His separate Red Sox manager card was #63 in 1978 Topps. In September 1978, he replaced Butch Hobson at third base with Jack Brohamer; Boston won eight straight games to force a tie with the Yankees.

Don Zimmer signed with Brooklyn in 1949 and played twelve major-league seasons. A pitch fractured his skull while he was with Triple-A St. Paul in July 1953; after recovering, he made his major-league debut for Brooklyn on July 2, 1954. He won World Series titles with the Dodgers in 1955 and 1959 and batted .235 with 91 home runs and 352 RBI in 1,095 major-league games. Zimmer later managed the Padres, Red Sox, Rangers and Cubs. He led Chicago to the National League East title and won the league's Manager of the Year award in 1989. As Joe Torre's Yankees bench coach from 1996 through 2003, he won four more World Series championships. Boston pitcher Bill Lee nicknamed him 'The Gerbil.' The Red Sox and Rays inducted him into their team halls of fame, and Tampa Bay retired his number 66 in 2015.
