About Bob Stanley
Stanley earned a save in his major league debut on April 16, 1977, pitching 4 innings against Cleveland and allowing 1 earned run. His Boston rookie card followed as 1978 Topps #186. He finished 1977 with an 8-7 record in 13 starts and 28 relief appearances.
Bob Stanley used a sinking fastball in 13 seasons spent entirely with the Boston Red Sox, alternating between starting and relief assignments. Boston selected him in the first round of the January 1974 secondary draft. He developed at Elmira, Winter Haven and Bristol before reaching the majors. In 1983, he saved 33 games and earned an All-Star selection. During Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, his wild pitch allowed Kevin Mitchell to score the tying run in the tenth inning. Stanley finished his career with 637 appearances, 115 wins and 132 saves. The Red Sox inducted him into their team Hall of Fame in 2000.
