1978 Topps #511 Frank Duffy

About Frank Duffy
This card still lists Cleveland, but Duffy had changed clubs by spring: he was dealt to Boston for pitcher Rick Kreuger in late March. Don Zimmer used him at third, short and second behind Rick Burleson, and he hit .260 in 64 games. The Red Sox lost the one-game playoff to the Yankees on October 2.
Frank Duffy was a glove-first shortstop who played ten seasons in the majors, 1970 through 1979, for the Reds, Giants, Indians and Red Sox. A three-sport athlete at Turlock High School, he graduated from Stanford with a psychology degree, was named a Sporting News All-American in 1967, and was the sixth pick of that year's draft by Cincinnati. Reds manager Sparky Anderson preferred Dave Concepcion at short, and Duffy was moved twice in a single year, first to San Francisco and then to Cleveland. He started at shortstop for the Indians for six seasons and placed near the top of the league's shortstops in fielding percentage in each of his first five years there. He closed his career with the Red Sox in 1978 and 1979, and finished with a .232 average and 26 home runs in 915 games.
