1978 Topps #648 Gary Thomasson

About Gary Thomasson
Card #648 carries the Giants, but on March 15, 1978 he went to Oakland with Gary Alexander, Dave Heaverlo, John Henry Johnson, Phil Huffman, Alan Wirth and $300,000 for Vida Blue. After 47 games he was sent to the Yankees on June 15 for Dell Alston, Mickey Klutts and $50,000. He finished at .233 with 8 home runs in 101 games.
Gary Thomasson was a left-handed outfielder and first baseman who played nine major league seasons, six of them with the San Francisco Giants. The Giants drafted him in the seventh round in 1969 out of Oceanside High School in California, and he debuted on September 5, 1972, pinch-hitting for Frank Reberger in a 4-3 win over the Padres. Between 1978 and 1979 he changed teams three times, moving from the Giants to the Oakland Athletics, the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers, and he was on the Yankees' 1978 World Series winner. He finished with 900 games, 61 home runs and a .249 average. The Yomiuri Giants bought his contract after 1980 and he played two seasons in Japan on the biggest contract the league had given a player; he came close to the league strikeout record before a knee injury ended his career.
