About Jim Tyrone

Oakland acquired Tyrone from the Cubs for infielder Gaylen Pitts on March 15, 1977. He was hitting .347 with six homers in 30 games for the Triple-A club in San Jose when the A's brought him up on May 16. He played all three outfield spots, claimed the right-field job for good in August and finished at .245 with five home runs in 96 games. His Topps card, #487, carries the Athletics. On March 31, 1978, he was sent to Triple-A Vancouver.

Jim Tyrone was a right-handed outfielder who appeared in parts of four major league seasons, with the Chicago Cubs in 1972, 1974 and 1975 and the Oakland Athletics in 1977. A native of Alice, Texas, he played two seasons at Ranger College before helping Pan American University reach its first College World Series in 1971, when he hit .349 with 55 stolen bases. The Cubs drafted him in the seventh round that year. His brother Wayne also played for the Cubs, in 1976, and the two first played together on the 1979 Miami Amigos. Jim finished with a .227 average and eight home runs in 177 major league games, the last on October 2, 1977. In Japan he played four seasons, for the Seibu Lions in 1979 and 1980 and the Nankai Hawks in 1981 and 1982, and hit 35 home runs for Seibu in 1980. His Japanese totals were a .287 average, 74 home runs and 200 RBI.
