1978 Topps #158 Joaquin Andujar

About Joaquin Andujar
After predicting 25 wins in spring training, Andujar went 5-7 with a 3.42 ERA in 1978. A May batting-practice injury and then a hamstring pull that cost him nearly two months wrecked the year, and he finished in the bullpen, where he earned his first career save against Pittsburgh on August 25. His Astros card is #158.
Joaquin Andujar was a Dominican right-hander who pitched 13 seasons for the Houston Astros, St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland Athletics and finished 127-118 with a 3.58 ERA. A four-time All-Star, he peaked in St. Louis, where he went 15-10 with a 2.47 ERA in 1982, then won 20 games in 1984 and 21 in 1985. He won the 1984 Gold Glove at pitcher and led the National League that year in wins, innings (261.1) and shutouts (four). He started two games of the 1982 World Series against Milwaukee and won both, the first Dominican starter to win a World Series game. His 1985 Series ended in an ejection for arguing with umpire Don Denkinger in Game 7 and a clubhouse bathroom he wrecked with a bat. Cincinnati signed him out of San Pedro de Macoris in 1969 and traded him to Houston after the 1975 season. He was inducted into the Caribbean Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012 and died in San Pedro de Macoris in 2015.
