About John Urrea

Urrea finished his first St. Louis season 7-6 with a 3.16 ERA in 1977. On August 29, he took a 3-2 lead into the eighth inning at San Diego before leaving after a leadoff walk. His Cardinals rookie card appeared in 1978 Topps as #587.

John Urrea, born in Los Angeles, was a right-handed pitcher who debuted with St. Louis on April 10, 1977, and spent five major league seasons with the Cardinals and Padres. The Cardinals had selected him 14th overall in the January 1974 draft. On December 8, 1980, St. Louis sent him to San Diego in the trade that brought Rollie Fingers, Gene Tenace and Bob Shirley to the Cardinals. Urrea worked entirely in relief for the 1981 Padres, posting a 2.39 ERA in 38 appearances. He finished his major league career with 17 wins, 9 saves and a 3.74 ERA in 363 1/3 innings.
