1978 Topps #110 Richie Zisk

About Richie Zisk
A 10-year contract signed with Texas as a free agent on November 9, 1977 made Zisk the first major league position player on a deal of that length. With Al Oliver, Bobby Bonds and Juan Beniquez in the outfield he split time between left, right and designated hitter, hitting .262 with 22 home runs and 85 RBIs. On card #110 he is printed with the Rangers.
Richie Zisk was a right-handed outfielder and designated hitter who played 13 seasons for the Pirates, White Sox, Rangers and Mariners and finished with 207 home runs and a .287 average. A third-round Pittsburgh pick in 1967 out of Seton Hall, he waited years behind Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell and Al Oliver in the Pirates system; Clemente's death on December 31, 1972 opened the way to regular work. He played in the 1974 and 1975 NLCS, the only postseason series of his career, both lost by Pittsburgh. Traded to the White Sox, he left as a free agent for Texas, later moved to Seattle in an 11-player trade in December 1980, and was named The Sporting News AL Comeback Player of the Year in 1981. He was a two-time All-Star and retired after the 1983 season. He then worked in the Chicago Cubs organization as a minor league hitting instructor, Daytona Cubs hitting coach and manager, and Florida scout. Daytona retired his number 22 in 2007. He entered the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Florida State League Hall of Fame in 2014.
