1978 Topps #532 Skip Jutze

About Skip Jutze
Seattle's first season in the league gave Jutze 42 games in 1977, 40 of them behind the plate. He hit .220 with 24 hits in 109 at-bats. He drove in 15 runs and hit all three of his career home runs that year. His #532 lists him with the Mariners.
Skip Jutze was a right-handed catcher who appeared in 254 major league games over six seasons, 1972 through 1977, with the St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners. The Cardinals drafted him in the fourth round in 1968 out of Central Connecticut State University, and he taught at Candlewood Junior High School in Dix Hills, New York, before his debut on September 1, 1972. On November 29, 1972 St. Louis sent him and Milt Ramirez to Houston for Ray Busse and Bobby Fenwick, and he caught 86 games for the Astros in 1973. He finished with a .215 average, 3 home runs and 51 RBI. He was a member of the first Seattle Mariners team in 1977 and hit the franchise's first grand slam on May 17 of that year in the Kingdome. He credited B-complex vitamins, recommended by a cafeteria cashier, for easing his tension at the plate, and he later passed the advice to pitcher Frank MacCormack. Jutze is a convert to Judaism.
