1979 Topps #264 Don Robinson

About Don Robinson
A 14-6 record and 3.47 ERA in 1978 preceded Robinson's 1979 Topps rookie card, #264, with Pittsburgh. He finished 1979 at 8-8, then worked from the bullpen in October. He saved the NLCS opener against Cincinnati and won Game 2, followed by another win in World Series Game 2 against Baltimore.
Don Robinson pitched as both a starter and a reliever for the Pirates and Giants before finishing with the Angels and Phillies. Pittsburgh selected the right-hander in the third round of the 1975 draft. Shoulder trouble interrupted his career, and the Pirates shifted him to a setup role in 1984; he saved 10 games that year and received the Hutch Award. Robinson moved to San Francisco in 1987 and won 12 games for its 1989 pennant winner. He earned Silver Slugger awards in 1982, 1989 and 1990, and hit .231 with 13 home runs over his career. Giants teammate Mike Krukow called him "The Caveman" for his physique and endurance through surgeries and injections. Robinson finished with 109 wins, 57 saves and a 3.79 ERA.
