1979 Topps #92 Jim Bibby

About Jim Bibby
Bibby went 12-4 with a 2.81 ERA for the 1979 Pirates and pitched in both postseason rounds. In Game 2 of the NLCS he went seven innings against Cincinnati and left with a 2-1 lead. In the World Series he went 6 1/3 innings in Game 4 and four in Game 7 against Baltimore. Card #92 pictures him with Pittsburgh.
Jim Bibby was a 6-foot-5, 235-pound right-hander whose fastball drew comparisons to Nolan Ryan's, and who won 111 major league games between 1972 and 1984 for the Cardinals, Rangers, Indians and Pirates. He reached the majors at 27: a New York Mets signee out of Fayetteville State in 1965, he spent two years as an Army truck driver in Vietnam and missed all of 1970 after spinal fusion surgery. On July 30, 1973 he no-hit the Oakland Athletics 6-0, striking out 13, the first no-hitter in Rangers history. His best year came with Pittsburgh in 1980, when he went 19-6 and pitched in the All-Star Game, one year after the Pirates won the 1979 World Series. On May 19, 1981 he threw a one-hit shutout of the Braves, retiring the final 27 batters after a leadoff single. After his playing days he coached pitchers in the Lynchburg, Virginia organization for 15 years, and the Hillcats retired his number 26. His younger brother Henry Bibby played in the NBA.
