About Jim Barr

With the Angels in 1979, Barr went 10-12 with a 4.20 ERA. He made 25 starts in 36 games as California won the AL West and reached the playoffs for the first time. He broke his hand punching a toilet at the party celebrating the division title. Topps #461 still shows him with the Giants.

Jim Barr was a right-handed pitcher who spent most of a 12-year career with the San Francisco Giants, with two seasons for the California Angels. A two-time NCAA champion at USC in 1968 and 1970, he signed with the Giants as a third-round pick in the 1970 secondary draft. In August 1972 he set a major-league record by retiring 41 consecutive batters across two starts. He won at least ten games for the Giants in each season from 1973 to 1977. He finished 101-112 with a 3.56 ERA and 12 saves, pitching in 454 games. After 1978 he signed with the Angels, and later returned to the Giants for 1982 and 1983, appearing in 53 games each year. He then coached pitching at Sacramento State for 16 years.
