1979 Topps #469 Lance Parrish

About Lance Parrish
New manager Les Moss told Milt May that Parrish would be the Tigers' number one catcher, and May was sent to the White Sox over Memorial Day weekend to clear the job. Parrish answered with a .591 week that earned Player of the Week, and Sparky Anderson replaced Moss on June 12. He hit .276 with 19 home runs and 65 RBIs. Behind the plate he led the American League with 21 passed balls. His #469 card lists him with the Tigers.
Lance Parrish was a power-hitting catcher with a strong arm who played 19 major league seasons for seven clubs, most of them in Detroit. The Tigers took him 16th overall in the 1974 draft, and in his second big-league game, on September 7, 1977, he singled, doubled and homered for four RBIs. He was an All-Star eight times and won six Silver Slugger awards and three Gold Gloves. His 32 home runs in 1982 set an American League record for catchers, and he broke it with 33 in 1984. That year he caught Jack Morris's no-hitter on April 7 and homered off Goose Gossage in Game 5 of the World Series as Detroit beat San Diego. He left as a free agent for the Phillies in 1987, then played for the Angels, Mariners, Indians, Pirates and Blue Jays, retiring after 1995 with 324 home runs and 1,070 RBIs. He later coached for the Tigers and managed in the minors.
