1979 Topps #310 Thurman Munson

About Thurman Munson
A .297 average, 6 home runs and 71 RBIs made up Munson's 1978. In ALCS game three he hit a 475-foot home run off Doug Bird over Monument Park for a 6-5 win over Kansas City. He drove in seven runs as the Yankees beat the Dodgers in six games and caught Ron Cey's foul pop-up for the last out. In 1979 he played 97 games, the last on August 1, with the Yankees fourth in the East, 14 games behind Baltimore. His Yankees card is #310.
Thurman Munson caught for the New York Yankees in all 11 of his seasons, 1969 through 1979, and hit .292 with 113 home runs and 701 RBIs. The Yankees took him fourth overall in the 1968 draft out of Kent State, where he had been a College All-American. He was the 1970 American League Rookie of the Year and the 1976 MVP, won three Gold Gloves and made seven All-Star teams. Billy Martin named him captain before the 1976 season, the first Yankees captain since Lou Gehrig, and New York won three straight pennants and the 1977 and 1978 World Series. He was the second catcher, after Johnny Bench, to win a Rookie of the Year award, an MVP award, a Gold Glove and a World Series title. Munson bought a Cessna Citation jet so he could fly home to his family in Canton on off-days, and on August 2, 1979, he died at 32 when it crashed short of the runway while he practiced landings at Akron-Canton airport. The Yankees retired number 15 at once and dedicated a plaque to him in Monument Park. In 2000 he joined the inaugural class of the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame.
