1979 Topps #524 Tom Burgmeier

About Tom Burgmeier
Burgmeier signed with Boston as a free agent on February 17, 1978. His first Red Sox year brought a 2-1 record, a 4.40 ERA and 4 saves in 35 games. One of those was a start in the opener of a July 24 doubleheader against the Twins, and he left in the fifth inning with the score tied 3-3. Card #524 in the 1979 Topps set shows him with Boston. In 1979 he went 3-2 with a 2.74 ERA and 60 strikeouts.
Tom Burgmeier pitched in 745 major league games over 17 seasons, all but three in relief. The left-hander signed with Houston for a $10,000 bonus in 1961. After the club released him in 1964, San Jose manager Rocky Bridges recommended him to the Angels. Burgmeier reached the majors with California in 1968 and later pitched for Kansas City, Minnesota, Boston and Oakland. He made the 1980 American League All-Star team and finished that season with 24 saves and a 2.00 ERA for the Red Sox. His career ended in 1984 with a 79-55 record, a 3.23 ERA and 102 saves. Burgmeier later worked as a Royals video coordinator, coached pitchers in their farm system and served as the major league club's bullpen coach. He also coached at Bowie, Burlington and Omaha.
