About Terry Turner

Terrance Lamont "Cotton Top" Turner began his pro career in 1900 with the Wheeling Stogies, and after the Pittsburgh Pirates bought his contract he debuted in the majors in 1901. Following two seasons at Columbus, he landed in Cleveland in 1904 and became a fixture of the club, playing shortstop, second, and third base through 1918 before a final season with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1919. A quintessential deadball utility infielder listed at 5-foot-8 and 149 pounds, Turner was prized for his glovework, leading American League shortstops in fielding, assists, and double plays in 1906, when he also hit .291. Over 17 seasons he batted .253 with roughly 1,472 hits and 256 stolen bases, and his 1,619 games long stood as the Cleveland franchise record. Nicknamed "Cotton Top," reportedly for his light hair, he is credited with pioneering the head-first slide after feet-first slides kept catching his spikes. Released after 1918, he narrowly missed Cleveland's 1920 World Series title. He is not in the Hall of Fame.
