About Jake Pitler
Jacob Albert "Jake" Pitler (1894-1968) appears here not as a player but as a coach - his 1952 Topps card captures his long tenure on the Brooklyn Dodgers staff. A New York-born second baseman raised near Pittsburgh, he entered pro ball in 1912 in the Class D Ohio-Pennsylvania League and reached the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1917, playing alongside Honus Wagner. His big-league career spanned just 1917-1918, batting .232 with no home runs and 23 RBI, but on August 22, 1917 he set the record for putouts in a game by a second baseman (15) during a 22-inning marathon. Pitler became the Dodgers' first-base coach from 1947 through 1957, serving under managers Leo Durocher, Burt Shotton, Charlie Dressen, and Walter Alston through six National League pennants and the 1955 World Series title. Credited with spotting a young Gil Hodges at a tryout, he retired rather than move to Los Angeles. As a scarce high-number series card (#311-407, printed in far smaller quantities), #395 is tougher to find than the set's lower numbers.
