About Johnny Berardino
Johnny Berardino was a versatile infielder who signed with the St. Louis Browns organization after starring at the University of Southern California, where he reportedly batted .424 in Pacific Coast collegiate play. He debuted in the majors in 1939 and played 11 seasons through 1952, interrupted by World War II service in the military from 1942 to 1945; his career spanned the St. Louis Browns (1939-1942, 1946-1947, 1951), the Cleveland Indians (1948-1949), and the Pittsburgh Pirates (1950, 1952). A right-handed hitter who saw time at second base, shortstop, third base, and the outfield, he batted .249 with 755 hits, 36 home runs, and 387 RBI across 912 games, with a career-high 89 RBI in 1941 and a 21-game hitting streak in 1946. He was a member of Cleveland's 1948 World Series championship club, though he did not appear in the Series, and he was never selected to an All-Star team. Berardino is best remembered beyond the diamond: after retiring he became a full-time actor and played Dr. Steve Hardy on ABC's "General Hospital" from 1963 until shortly before his death in 1996, and in 1993 he received recognition on the Hollywood Walk of Fame — the only person to own both a World Series ring and a Walk of Fame star. As an actor he was billed "John Beradino," dropping one "r" from the "Berardino" spelling that appears on this 1952 Topps card.
