About Carlos Bernier
Carlos Eugene Bernier Rodríguez (1927–1989), a speedy right-handed outfielder from Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico, entered pro ball in the late 1940s and rose through the Colonial and Florida International leagues before starring for the Pacific Coast League's Hollywood Stars, where he was named 1952 PCL Rookie of the Year. Pittsburgh promoted him in 1953, and when he debuted at Forbes Field on April 22, many historians regard him as the first Black player in Pirates history (MLB officially credits Curt Roberts). It proved to be his only major-league season: he hit .213 with 66 hits, 3 home runs, and 31 RBI over 105 games, and on May 2, 1953 tied the modern record with three triples in a single game. Nicknamed "The Comet" for his blazing basepath speed, he spent 17 pro seasons—largely a PCL legend—winning a batting title with a .351 career-high average. He was inducted into the Puerto Rico Sports Hall of Fame (1999) and the Pacific Coast League Hall of Fame (2004). This is his 1953 Topps rookie card, a scarce high-number (#243).
