About John Hetki
Signed by the Cincinnati Reds organization before the 1942 season out of Leavenworth, Kansas, right-hander John Edward "Johnny" Hetki reached the majors in 1945 after two years of World War II military service. A durable long reliever who also made 23 starts, he pitched parts of eight big-league seasons (1945–48, 1950–54) for the Reds, St. Louis Browns and Pittsburgh Pirates, the club shown on his 1953 Topps card (which lists him as "John," though he was better known as Johnny). Pittsburgh had taken him from the Browns in the 1952 Rule 5 draft. In 1954 he led the National League with 46 games finished. He retired with an 18–26 record, a 4.39 ERA, 13 saves and 175 strikeouts over 214 appearances, and had gone 101–71 with a 3.27 ERA across eight minor-league seasons. He died in 2019 at age 96.
