About Johnny O'Brien
Born December 11, 1930, in South Amboy, New Jersey, Johnny O'Brien reached the majors after starring in two sports at Seattle University, where he was a basketball All-American and became the first college player to score 1,000 points in a single season, famously netting 43 in an 84-81 upset of the Harlem Globetrotters in January 1952. Passing up the NBA, he and his twin brother Eddie both signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in March 1953, and the pair became the first twins in major-league history to play together for the same team. A right-handed infielder, Johnny played mainly second base and shortstop across six seasons with the Pirates (1953, 1955-58), St. Louis Cardinals (1958) and Milwaukee Braves (1959), and even doubled as a relief pitcher late in his career. He was a career .250 hitter (204-for-815) with 4 home runs and 59 RBI in 339 games, and went 1-3 with a 5.61 ERA on the mound. Nicknamed "Johnny-O," this high-number card is his 1953 Topps rookie card.
