About Andy Seminick
Andrew Wasal "Andy" Seminick (1920-2004) was a durable right-handed catcher signed out of the coal country of West Virginia by Pirates scouts in 1940, breaking in with the Class-D London club before reaching the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1943. Over a 15-year career he played for the Phillies (1943-51, 1955-57) and the Cincinnati Reds/Redlegs (1952-54), appearing in 1,304 games and batting .243 with 953 hits, 164 home runs and 556 RBI. He was the backbone of the 1950 "Whiz Kids" Phillies, who won the franchise's first pennant in 35 years; because he was the longest-tenured player on the youthful club, writers dubbed the 29-year-old Seminick "Grandpa Whiz." That season he enjoyed his best year, hitting .288 with 24 home runs and 68 RBI, and was named the National League's starting All-Star catcher. He caught in the 1950 World Series against the Yankees while playing on a badly injured ankle. After his playing days he became a longtime Phillies coach, minor-league manager, and instructor. This card is a Series 4 high number, from the scarcer final run of the 340-card 1956 Topps set.
