About Clem Labine
Clem Labine was a right-handed relief pitcher signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers, who assigned him to Newport News of the Class-B Piedmont League in 1944 before he served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division in World War II. Reaching Brooklyn in 1950, he became the bullpen anchor of the Dodgers' great mid-1950s teams, pitching for Brooklyn and Los Angeles through 1960 and closing his 13-year career with Detroit, Pittsburgh and the New York Mets. Over 513 games he went 77-56 with a 3.63 ERA, 96 saves and 551 strikeouts, was named an All-Star in 1956 and 1957, and led the National League in saves both of those seasons. Labine won three World Series titles: with Brooklyn in 1955 (when he went 13-5 in an NL-leading 60 appearances), with Los Angeles in 1959, and with Pittsburgh in 1960. His signature moment came in Game 6 of the 1956 World Series, when Walter Alston gave him a surprise start and he threw a 10-inning shutout to beat the Yankees' Bob Turley 1-0, the run scoring on a Jackie Robinson walk-off hit. He had earlier shut out the Giants in the 1951 pennant playoff, and he held the NL career saves record from 1958 to 1962. This is a high-number card from the fourth series of the 1956 Topps set, which carries no documented error or back-stock variation.
