About Bob Lennon

Robert Albert "Archie" Lennon (1928-2005) was a Brooklyn-born outfielder whose legend lives in the minor leagues rather than the majors. The Brooklyn Dodgers signed him at age 16 in 1945 after a tryout at Ebbets Field arranged by scout Turk Karam and approved by GM Branch Rickey. A left-handed slugger, Lennon spent parts of 16 seasons in the minors, hitting 278 home runs. His signature year came in 1954 with the Southern Association's Nashville Vols, where he clubbed a league-record 64 home runs while batting .345 with 161 RBIs, 42 of the homers aided by Sulphur Dell's famously short 262-foot right-field fence. The nickname "Archie" stuck because his Brooklyn accent recalled a character from the radio comedy "Duffy's Tavern." His major league trials with the New York Giants (1954, 1956) and Chicago Cubs (1957) were brief; he hit just .165 with a single home run, a three-run shot off Sal Maglie at Ebbets Field on April 30, 1957. This 1957 Topps card captures his lone big-league season with the Cubs.
