About Norm Zauchin
Norbert Henry "Norm" Zauchin (1929-1999) was a right-handed first baseman born in Royal Oak, Michigan, a Detroit suburb. Signed by Red Sox scout Maurice DeLoof in 1948, the towering 6-foot-4 slugger tore through the minors, and in 1950 broke the Southern Association's single-season home-run record with 35 for the Birmingham Barons. He debuted for Boston on September 23, 1951, but broke through in 1955, belting 27 home runs and driving in 93 runs to finish third in AL Rookie of the Year voting behind Herb Score and Billy Klaus. His signature moment came May 27, 1955, when he collected 10 RBIs on three home runs and a bases-loaded double in the first five innings of a 16-0 rout of Washington. Traded with Albie Pearson to the Senators for Pete Runnels before 1958, Zauchin played six MLB seasons (Red Sox 1951, 1955-57; Senators 1958-59), hitting .233 with 50 homers and 159 RBIs. This 1957 Topps card captures him during his Boston tenure.
