1957 Topps #373 Pete Whisenant

About Pete Whisenant
Thomas Peter Whisenant, born December 14, 1929, in Asheville, North Carolina, was a right-handed outfielder who debuted with the Boston Braves in 1952. He spent parts of eight seasons (1952, 1955-1961) as a reserve outfielder and pinch hitter for the Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Redlegs/Reds, Cleveland Indians, and Washington Senators/Minnesota Twins. His best year came in 1956 with the Cubs, hitting 11 home runs with 46 RBIs and a .239 average in 103 games. This 1957 Topps card, his first season with Cincinnati, is his Topps rookie card. Over 475 career games he batted .224 with 37 home runs and 134 RBIs. Whisenant is remembered for a baseball oddity: on May 15, 1960, he was announced as a pinch hitter for Cleveland just minutes after being traded to Washington, believed to make him the only player to appear in a box score for a team he no longer belonged to. He later coached the Reds and managed in the Athletics farm system. He died March 22, 1996.
