1957 Topps #374 Don Cardwell

About Don Cardwell
Donald Eugene Cardwell (1935-2008) was a right-handed pitcher who signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur free agent in 1954 and reached the majors in 1957 -- the year of this Topps rookie card. A hard thrower, he pitched 14 big-league seasons for the Phillies (1957-1960), Chicago Cubs (1960-1962), St. Louis Cardinals (1962), Pittsburgh Pirates (1963-1966), New York Mets (1967-1970), and Atlanta Braves (1970). His signature moment came on May 15, 1960: just two days after being traded to the Cubs, he no-hit the Cardinals 4-0 at Wrigley Field, becoming the first pitcher in major-league history to throw a no-hitter in his debut with a new team following a trade. He won 15 games for the Cubs in 1961 and later helped the 1969 'Miracle Mets' win the World Series, appearing in Game 1 against Baltimore. A capable hitter for a pitcher, Cardwell belted 15 career home runs and finished 102-138 with a 3.92 ERA and 1,211 strikeouts.
