About Jim Landis
James Henry Landis (1934-2017) was a center fielder signed by the Chicago White Sox as an amateur free agent in 1952 for $2,500 out of Contra Costa Junior College. After a Korean-era Army stint in Alaska, he climbed through the minors and debuted for the White Sox on April 16, 1957 - the season this Topps card documents as his rookie issue. Landis anchored center field for Chicago through 1964, later playing for Kansas City, Cleveland, Houston, Detroit, and Boston before retiring in 1967. A key member of the 1959 pennant-winning "Go-Go" White Sox, he hit .272 that year and batted .292 in the World Series loss to the Dodgers. Regarded as one of the finest defensive center fielders of his era, he won five straight Gold Gloves (1960-1964) and was a 1962 All-Star, finishing with a .247 average, 93 homers, 1,061 hits, and 139 steals. In 2000 he was named to the White Sox All-Century Team. This card is a Series 5 short print.
