About Don Elston

Donald Ray Elston (1929-1995), a right-handed pitcher from Campbellstown, Ohio, signed with the Chicago Cubs as an amateur free agent in December 1947 and reached the majors on September 17, 1953, debuting the same day as future Hall of Famer Ernie Banks. After a December 1955 trade sent him to the Brooklyn Dodgers, Elston appeared in a single game for Brooklyn in 1957 before being dealt back to the Cubs that May, the roster shuffle behind this 1957 Topps rookie card. Converting permanently to relief, he became one of the National League's busiest arms, leading the league with 69 appearances in 1958 and earning back-to-back All-Star selections in 1959, when he recorded a save in the July All-Star Game and went 10-8. His frequent work earned him the nickname 'Every Day' Elston, and writer Jerome Holtzman credited Elston and Bill Henry with inspiring the creation of the save statistic. He finished with 64 saves over 449 games.
