About Andre Rodgers
Kenneth André Ian Rodgers (1934-2004), a Nassau native and star cricketer, became the first Bahamian to play in the integrated major leagues. Until 1952 he had barely seen baseball, but he paid his own way to a 1954 New York Giants tryout, signed, and debuted for the Giants on April 16, 1957 - the season captured on this Topps rookie card. A 6-foot-3 shortstop, he moved west with the franchise to San Francisco, then played for the Chicago Cubs (1961-1964) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1965-1967). His finest stretch came in 1962, when he took over shortstop for the Cubs after Ernie Banks shifted to first base and batted .278; that year Rodgers, second baseman Ken Hubbs, and Banks set a league double-play record. Over 854 games he hit .249 with 45 home runs and 245 RBIs. Nicknamed the 'Gentle Giant' - the title of a 2014 documentary about him - Rodgers inspired a baseball boom in the Bahamas and was later honored with a national stadium bearing his name.
