About Cal Neeman

Calvin Amandus Neeman (1929-2015) was a right-handed catcher from Valmeyer, Illinois. Signed out of a 1949 tryout camp by Yankees scout Lou Maguolo, he spent six seasons in New York's farm system, interrupted by U.S. Army service during the Korean War, before the Chicago Cubs selected him in the December 1956 Rule 5 draft. Neeman made his major-league debut on April 16, 1957, singling off Warren Spahn, and enjoyed a standout rookie year: he led National League catchers in games caught, earned a spot on The Sporting News All-Rookie squad, and was voted the Cubs' most valuable player by his teammates, finishing ahead of Ernie Banks. He batted .258 with 10 home runs that season. Neeman played through 1963 with the Cubs, Phillies, Pirates, Indians, and Senators, retiring with a .224 average, 30 home runs, and 97 RBIs. This 1957 Topps card is his rookie card.
