About Ellis Kinder
Ellis Raymond "Old Folks" Kinder (1914-1968) was a right-handed pitcher who reached the majors astonishingly late, debuting with the St. Louis Browns in 1946 at age 31 after years in the minors, including a 17-12 season for Jackson, Tennessee in 1939. Traded to the Boston Red Sox in 1948, he became a star, peaking in 1949 with a 23-6 record while leading the American League in shutouts (six) and earning The Sporting News Pitcher of the Year honors. That season ended bitterly when manager Joe McCarthy pinch-hit for him in the pennant-deciding finale at Yankee Stadium, a decision debated in Boston for decades. Kinder later reinvented himself as one of baseball's first ace relievers, leading the AL in saves in 1951 and 1953. His nickname "Old Folks" reflected his success at an advanced age. He finished 102-71 with a 3.43 ERA and 104 saves, closing his career in 1957 with the Chicago White Sox, the team shown on this scarce high-number Series Four card.
