About Dave Hillman
Darius Dutton "Dave" Hillman (1927-2022) was a right-handed pitcher from Dungannon, Virginia, signed by the Chicago Cubs on December 30, 1949. After a strong minor-league climb that included a 20-win 1951 season at Rock Hill and a perfect game, he debuted for the Cubs on April 30, 1955. Hillman pitched for Chicago from 1955 to 1959, then Boston (1960-61), Cincinnati (1962) and the New York Mets (1962). A slightly built control artist, he was known for pitching well despite meager run support. His finest moment came on May 6, 1959, when he two-hit the Pirates for a 3-0 shutout, his only big-league whitewash. That November he and Jim Marshall were sent to the Red Sox for Dick Gernert in the first interleague trade made without waivers in MLB history. Over eight seasons he went 21-37 with a 3.87 ERA and 296 strikeouts. This 1957 Topps card is his rookie card, a scarce high-number Series Four entry.
