About Eddie Kasko

Eddie Kasko (1931-2020) was a slick-fielding infielder who broke into pro ball in 1949 and, after six minor-league seasons and two years of Army service during the Korean War, debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals on April 18, 1957. His 1957 Topps card captures that rookie year, when he played mostly third base in 134 games and hit .273. Traded to Cincinnati after 1958, he became the Reds' regular shortstop and third baseman, was voted team MVP by Cincinnati writers in 1960, and earned a 1961 National League All-Star selection. That fall he starred in the 1961 World Series against the Yankees, starting all five games at short and leading the Reds with seven hits for a .318 average in a losing effort. Kasko also played for Houston and Boston, retiring in 1966 with 935 career hits. He later managed the Red Sox from 1970 to 1973, developing Carlton Fisk and Dwight Evans, then ran the club's scouting. He was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2010.
