1957 Topps #364 Cal McLish

Cleveland Indians · American League · Series 5 (#353-407) · pitcher
Rookie CardErrorUER

Uncorrected error: '44 Season Missing in Stats. It was never corrected, so there is only one version of the card.

The #176 "Bakep" error: the back header reads "EUGENF W. BAKEP," the whole name garbled on the printing plate. It is the ONLY error Topps corrected in 1957, which is why the error back carries the premium — a PSA population near 215, topping out at PSA 8.

About Cal McLish

Calvin Coolidge Julius Caesar Tuskahoma McLish carried one of baseball's most memorable names, chosen by a father finally granted the chance to name a child. A right-handed pitcher (and switch-hitter) from Anadarko, Oklahoma, McLish signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1944, scouted by Tom Greenwade, and debuted at 18 that same year. He then served in the Army's 3rd Infantry Division in Europe, earning two battle stars before resuming his career. Over 15 big-league seasons he pitched for the Dodgers, Pirates, Cubs, Indians, Reds, White Sox, and Phillies, finishing 92-92 with a 4.01 ERA, 713 strikeouts, and 1,609 innings. His finest years came with Cleveland: 16-8 with a 2.99 ERA in 1958, then 19-8 in 1959, when he made the American League All-Star team and earned the save in the AL's 5-3 win. He later became a respected pitching coach and entered the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. This 1957 Topps card is his rookie card and carries an uncorrected error, omitting his 1944 season from the statistics.
