About Ozzie Virgil

Osvaldo José Virgil Pichardo (born May 17, 1932, in Monte Cristi) broke ground as the first Dominican-born player in the major leagues. Signed by New York Giants scout George Mack in 1953 for a $300 bonus, he debuted for the Giants on September 23, 1956, at the Polo Grounds. A versatile utility man who was primarily a third baseman, Virgil played every position except pitcher and center field across parts of nine seasons (1956-1969) with the Giants, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, and Pittsburgh Pirates, batting .231 with 174 hits over 324 games. On June 6, 1958, he became the first player of color for the Tigers, and in his Briggs Stadium home debut he went 5-for-5, a moment he called his greatest baseball thrill. He later coached third base for 19 seasons, including the Padres' 1984 National League pennant. His son Ozzie Virgil Jr. became a two-time All-Star catcher. This 1957 Topps issue is Virgil's rookie card, a scarce Series 5 short print.
