About Tom Cheney
Tom Cheney was a right-handed pitcher from Morgan, Georgia, who signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in the early 1950s for a modest $1,500 bonus and climbed through their farm system before debuting in the majors on April 21, 1957 — the season captured by this Topps rookie card. Over eight big-league seasons he pitched for the Cardinals (1957, 1959), Pittsburgh Pirates (1960-1961), and Washington Senators (1961-1966), and picked up a World Series ring as a reliever with the champion 1960 Pirates, striking out Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle in relief. Nicknamed 'Skins' or 'Skinhead' by teammates for his premature baldness, Cheney authored one of baseball's most durable records: on September 12, 1962, he struck out 21 Baltimore Orioles across a 16-inning complete game, throwing 228 pitches in a 2-1 Senators win. That single-game strikeout mark still stands. An elbow injury in 1963 cut his career short, leaving him 19-29 with a 3.77 ERA and 345 strikeouts.
