1957 Topps #358 Jerry Lynch

About Jerry Lynch
Gerald Thomas "Jerry" Lynch, an outfielder born in Bay City, Michigan, signed with the Greenville Bucks of the Class-C Cotton States League in 1950 after working as a boxcar unloader. Following two years of U.S. Army service during the Korean War, he was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1953 Rule 5 Draft and reached the majors in 1954. Traded to Cincinnati in 1957, the year of this card, Lynch became one of baseball's greatest pinch-hitters, earning the nickname "Lynch in a Pinch," which took hold during the Reds' 1961 pennant run. That September 26 at Wrigley Field, his two-run pinch homer broke a 3-3 tie and helped clinch Cincinnati's first National League flag in 21 years; he batted .404 as a pinch-hitter that season. His 18 career pinch-hit home runs set a major-league record that stood until 1984. Over 13 seasons with the Pirates and Reds, Lynch hit .277 with 798 hits and 115 home runs. He was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1988.
