About Earl Torgeson
Clifford Earl Torgeson (1924-1990), a first baseman from Snohomish, Washington, signed with the Seattle Rainiers in 1941, served in the U.S. Army through World War II (wounded during the Battle of the Bulge), and reached the majors with the Boston Braves in 1947. He batted .285 with 16 homers as a rookie, then helped Boston win the 1948 National League pennant, hitting .389 in that year's World Series against Cleveland to lead all regulars. In 1950 he led the NL with 120 runs scored. He later played for the Phillies, Tigers, and White Sox, winning the 1959 AL pennant with Chicago and leading AL first basemen with a .999 fielding average in 1957. A fierce, bespectacled competitor known for on-field brawls, Torgeson retired with a .265 average, 149 home runs, 740 RBI, and 982 walks. Nicknamed "The Earl of Snohomish" after his boyhood idol and fellow townsman Earl Averill, he later served as a Snohomish County commissioner. This is his lone card as a Tiger, a Series 5 short print.
