About Faye Throneberry
Maynard Faye Throneberry (1931-1999), a left-handed-hitting outfielder from Fisherville, Tennessee, was the older brother of "Marvelous Marv" Throneberry. Red Sox scout George Digby signed him in June 1950, after a Detroit contract was voided because he had not yet graduated high school. Throneberry starred at Single-A Scranton (.304, 13 homers in 1951) and debuted for Boston on April 15, 1952, hitting two grand slams as a rookie before a two-year Army stint that included Korea. Nicknamed "the Collierville Flash" for his Tennessee hometown during 1952 spring training, he never fully lived up to Casey Stengel's early praise. He played for the Red Sox (1952, 1955-57), Washington Senators (1957-60) and Los Angeles Angels (1961), batting .236 with 29 home runs over 521 games; his best year came in 1959, with a career-high 10 homers for Washington. After baseball he became a champion bird-dog trainer. This is his lone 1957 Topps card, issued during his first season with the Senators.
