About Frank Malzone
Frank Malzone, born February 28, 1930, in the Bronx, New York, signed with the Boston Red Sox out of Samuel Gompers High School in 1948 for $175 a month. After a minor-league climb interrupted by a broken ankle and two years of Army service, the sure-handed third baseman debuted for Boston in September 1955. In 1957 -- the season captured by this card -- he broke through as the Red Sox's regular third baseman, batting .292 with a career-high 103 RBIs and earning the very first Gold Glove Award ever presented at third base. He repeated as a Gold Glove winner in 1958 and 1959, was a durable All-Star selection across 1957 through 1964, and once played 475 consecutive games. Malzone spent his whole career with Boston (1955-1965) before a final season with the California Angels in 1966, finishing with a .274 average, 133 home runs, and 728 RBIs. He later scouted for the Red Sox for nearly three decades and entered the club's Hall of Fame in its 1995 inaugural class. He died December 29, 2015.
