1958 Topps #430 Bobby Thomson

About Bobby Thomson
Thomson began 1958 in Chicago after the Giants, who had just moved to San Francisco, traded him to the Cubs. He played 152 games and hit .283 with 21 home runs and 82 RBIs, almost all of it in the outfield, where he appeared in 148 games. His Topps #430 pictures him with the Cubs and falls in Series Five, the fifth of the six numbered series in a 494-card set that also carried the first Sport Magazine All-Star Selection cards.
Robert Brown Thomson was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and raised on Staten Island, which earned him the sportswriters' label "the Staten Island Scot". He signed with the New York Giants out of Curtis High School in 1942, served in the Army Air Forces, and reached the majors late in 1946. As an outfielder and third baseman he hit 29 home runs as a 1947 regular, drove in 109 runs at .309 in 1949, and made three All-Star teams (1948, 1949 and 1952). On October 3, 1951, his ninth-inning home run off Ralph Branca won the pennant playoff against Brooklyn, the "Shot Heard 'Round the World", one of the most famous moments in baseball history. He later played for the Milwaukee Braves, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles, and finished a 15-season career with 264 home runs and 1,026 RBIs in 1,779 games. A final season followed with the Yomiuri Giants in Japan. He was inducted into the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. He died in Savannah, Georgia, in 2010.
