Carl Erskine, known in Brooklyn as "Oisk," was a right-handed pitcher from Anderson, Indiana, who spent his whole career, 1948 to 1959, with the Dodgers. He went 122-78 with a 4.00 ERA and 981 strikeouts, won 20 games in 1953, and made the National League All-Star team in 1954. Known for a big overhand curve, he threw no-hitters against the Cubs in 1952 and the Giants in 1956. In the 1953 World Series he struck out 14 Yankees in one game, a record at the time. He pitched in five World Series and was part of the 1955 champions. After baseball he returned to Indiana, coached college ball at Anderson College, worked in banking, and spent decades supporting the Special Olympics, inspired by his son Jimmy.
