About Dick Littlefield

The 1958 Topps card, #241, shows Littlefield with the Chicago Cubs, the club he pitched for in 1957 when he went 2-3 with a 5.35 ERA in 48 games, all but two in relief. The Milwaukee Braves bought him on March 30, 1958. The card belongs to Series Three, the run of #177 to #264, in a 494-card set.

Dick Littlefield was a left-handed pitcher from Detroit who served in the Navy in World War II, then signed with the Red Sox and reached the majors in 1950. Over nine seasons he went 33-54 with a 4.71 ERA in 243 games, 83 of them starts, with 16 complete games, two shutouts and nine saves. His best year was 1954, when he won a career-high 10 games for the Pirates after Baltimore put him on waivers. He was famous for travel: he pitched for nine different big-league clubs, the Red Sox, White Sox, Tigers, Browns/Orioles, Pirates, Cardinals, Giants, Cubs and Braves, and in December 1956 he was traded to the Dodgers for Jackie Robinson, a deal voided when Robinson retired instead of reporting. He tied Bobo Newsom's mark for most clubs when he reached the Cubs. After his big-league days ended in 1958 he pitched in the minors, coached and managed in Texas, and later worked in a tool and die factory. He died in Detroit in 1997.
